'Unseeing' - Reason to die for
Here we are into the 2nd month of the year!
I'm elated to have a good response for our chatty blog, and true to this blog's title, all of you are indeed chatterboxes - even online! To the less enthusiastic ones: remember that you have a fortnight's worth of time to visit the school library to catch up on the happening chatroom! It's no fun if you are left out on the latest banter! Let's hope that this blog will continue its run throughout the year, hey?
Remember that we must agree to disagree and everyone's different. We shall not judge each other, but I do want to hear honest and well-supported opinions. Please think through your comments before typing and edit your work before publishing.
In 'Unseeing', Anna and Joseph were trapped in an unhappy marriage - Anna had sacrificed her religious pursuit and even though she tried to improve the situation by being a dutiful wife, she remained childless; Joseph had always wanted a loving wife whom he can have children with but had married an unwillingly and barren woman instead.
At the end of the story, we learned that Joseph's apology to Anna during his illness was not for something that she had thought it was for; rather, it was because he had another family. It was until the last day of his funeral that his eyes finally closed after his 'mistress' had visited him with their children. We know that he had been waiting for her to appear.
Why do you think that Joseph could finally close his eyes and rest in peace (or maybe not! we wouldn't know for sure)?
Just a few possible speculations:
- peace: he finally saw his beloved 'family'
- a relief: he knew that Anna now knows that truth and would not hold it against him because he is dead
- a revenge: he had always felt angry and unloved by Anna so he wanted to spite her by showing her that he had found someone better than her
- forgiveness: telling Anna indirectly that he has never blamed her for not loving him wholeheartedly and being barren
- a favour: to show Anna that she is released from the marriage chains and that she can continue her religous pursuits
There are many more possibilities if you think hard enough. Surprise me!

erm.. about this topic.. i had quite a hard time thinking about the possibilties... i think that Joseph could finally close his eyes because he sensed his "family" presences, which could give him happiness, at his funeral... i think that one more reason is that he was glad that his "mistress" bought his three kids to say the last goodbye... at the last, as what ms ang wrote.. i think its a relief that his wife finally know about the truth of him ahving a family outside, due to his wife unable to give birth...

Anyway,Joseph probably closed his eyes knowing that his mistress and his children were here to pay their last respects,i would feel that if i had a mistress...it's just a speculation okay?
Or the muscles controlling Joseph's corpse's eyelids rotted away thus closing the eyelids....sounds weird huh?...such a coincidence...

Yay!!!I'm the third to post am i???First time ever???I think that Joseph closed his eyes because his mistress and his children had gone to pay him their last respect.Maybe Joseph wanted 2 know if his family is safe so that he can rest in peace.

Also, maybe a heavy burden had been lifted off of him because his family finally knew about his mistress and children.
And lastly, maybe he wanted for his family and his mistress to get to know each other because the three children are Joseph's and because they carry the blood of Joseph.

Well, for me, I think Joseph has mixed feelings when he cannot close his eyes...
I think he feels happy to see his family for the last time before he can close his eyes...
I think he feels sad too because Anna will get to see his second wife who has three children. Anna doesn't have children...
I think that he also wants revenge because Anna doesn't love him as much as his mistress and Anna doesn't want children...
I think that Joseph wanted to ask for forgiveness because he had married another woman behind Anna's back...

I think Joseph knew that Anna now knows that truth finally that he had another family so that he won't regret. Another reason is that Joseph wants to have his loves on his side before resting in peace.

I think Joseph finally close his eyes because he see peace between the wife and the "mistress". He can see that his "mistress" finally went in to see him for the last time without being scolded for adultery .
Another possibilities is, he wanted to see his children but they did not come , so he waited till he sees them
before he rest in peace.

He wad felt with guilt, guilt that he had a mistress, guilt that he had commited adultary, so therefore, he can't close his eyes.
after a long wait, his 'wife' came to see him off, then, he can close his eyes for he finally saw the person he really love instead of the one that's always near him.

I think the other reason is he finally let Anna know that he had and affair outside but he did not blamed her for not giving him love and a child.

Usually, for muslims, if the eyes of a dead person is opened, it means that he or she has not fulfill his or her things that he wants to do OR either he had not prayed to the god more often...but in this case,Joseph finally close his eyes maybe because the god had finally made a decision to let him rest in peace and harmony....

I personally think that it was mere coincidence that the eyelids of Joseph when his mistress visited him for that last time.There is no actual evidence that when a person dies in guilty-stricken state,his eyes will remain open until he is forgiven or in peace...It was more logical if his eye were merely pulled open by muscle contractions due to loss of moisture after exposure to the open air but it really puzzles me that it closed after the mistress left.Was it due to the tears shed by her or was it something more phenomenal and alien...
I will think about it...

In this story , I think Joseph wants to leave this world happily . He had a mistress and three kids . Joseph wants children and love , yet Anna is still childless . The mistress gave birth to three kids for him and she also gave him love . Joseph also love his mistress , so he wants to see all his loved ones before he leave this world . After he had seen his mistress , he could leave this world peacefully .

hmm. the story is quite interesting and it is what is happening to around us. such things happen. i think he could finnaly close his eyes because his wishes has benn fulfilled to see his second 'family'. at last he is able to let Anna know about his secret that he is having a affair bahind her back since he has already apologised to her but somehow he did not have the time to confess to her that he had an affair when he is alive. and glad that although he does not have the chance to at least when he die his second 'family' is there
